Introducing Rebtel SMS Beta
During the course of last year, we received boat loads of feature and general service improvement suggestions from you, our wicked cool users. We read all your emails, Get Satisfaction threads, Tweets and Fan Page wall posts. From the bottom of our baby blue Rebtel hearts we would like to thank you for all the efforts you’ve made to help us take Rebtel to the next level. Together we will do great things in 2009 and we have some pretty spectacular stuff to come. Thank you.
Out of all the cool stuff you wanted to see on Rebtel.com, SMS messages to Rebtel friends was one that kept popping up time and time again. Even though we love talking to people (especially when the calls are cheap or free) we get what you’re saying. Sometimes an SMS message is a better man for the job than a lengthy phone call. Therefore we would like for you to meet the newest addition to the family of Rebtel services; our SMS Beta.
With the SMS Beta you can send cheap text messages straight from your address book to Rebtel friends as well as any other random person that you have a mobile phone number to (we don’t condone random SMS messaging). If you’re eager to give this a go but don’t really know where to start, I took the liberty of preparing a short visual guide.
First off, log in to your Rebtel account. Once you have that out of the way go to your Contact List. You will now have to take a pretty big decision, namely who you will grace with the pleasure of receiving an SMS from you
Once you’ve made up your mind, click on their name.

After the Contact Box has expanded, you will see a brand new option at the bottom that says ‘SMS’ and the name of your friend. Click this option to open up a Lightbox with the SMS Dashboard.
In my particular case, you can see that I have chosen to send my SMS to my Best Friend In The World. He’s the best. The drop down menu that specifies who the SMS is going out to is already defined as I previously clicked on this name. If you would change your mind you can use this menu to pick another recipient of your message. As you go along and start typing, you will see that the character, cost and SMS counters will start ticking. If you exceed the standard SMS limit of 160 characters your message will be divided up in to two sendouts instead of one.
When you’re done typing your message, simply press ‘Send’. That’s all there is to it! Please note that you are not able to send SMS messages via Rebtel to friends and family in the U.S. This problem is naturally something that we’re working hard on to amend so plese bear with us. Lastly, since this is a Beta and all, we still have some kinks left in the chain to straighten out. If you stumble upon any funny bugs that are giving you a hard time, please do send an email our way.
Ping this!

Hey Ricky,
When you have chosen your recipient and written your message, the cost for the SMS will be displayed at the bottom of the ‘Send SMS’ box.
A more comprehensive price list for the SMS service is to come.
Thanks!
Alex

Also, can my contacts send me an SMS back using the local number that shows up on their phone? If so, do I recieve that SMS on my phone?

@MJ
For now, you are only able to send SMS messages through the Rebtel website. Your regular preferred number shows up as the sender of the SMS, not a local number. In other words, you will receive a reply directly to your mobile phone.
@Chanan
All I can say is that we are working on some cool stuff. Sorry for the cryptic answer
@vinod bhanur
As we are still a rather small company, we don’t have the resources to provide our users with customer support over the phone. As of right now, you can reach our Customer Team on customerteam@rebtel.com for all account and payment related issues and http://www.getsatisfaction.com/rebtel for general questions.
Thanks guys!

While I greatly appreciate Rebtel improving their services I can only see the thousands upon thousands on shrugged shoulders in the Rebtel community.
There are many services (maybe not as reliable as Rebtel) that do the same thing, so I fail to see how this service stands out.
Here’s waiting for mobile to mobile SMS….

Rebtel SMS is quite good, I was using Vopium for making mobile calls, Rebtel SMS is quite good, but my question is that Rebtel has any kind of sync application like Vopium Sync? because for me its more important to make mobile data backup.

@Mil
Thanks for the kind words and thanks for using Rebtel. As WebSMS is a service that has been highly requested by a lot of users we felt obligated to add it. Even though it’s not very spectacular as such, we feel like it delivers great value to you guys (which in the end is the most important thing). Although, I fully recognize the urge for an announcement that makes you jump out of your seat rather than shrugging your shoulders. Sorry for the cryptic reply, but all I can say is that 2009 will be nice year for all Rebtel users
@Maria
Thanks for the feedback and for using the Rebtel service. Very much appreciated. The option of being able to sync your address book with “the cloud” and having them conveniently available for your if you would lose your phone is a great feature suggestion. Just as I wrote to Mil, we have some very cool and useful stuff coming up in 2009.

WebSMS is great but I had issues: I tested MSM to 2 friends in China, none get it FROM ME. When I was in China, I tested this to my own cell in China - the from showed strange numbers instead of my cell # as selected. I reported the issue via email already and I’m anxiously waiting for a solution to this. Thanks!

@Rosa
That’s great news Rosa! Thanks for using Rebtel and I’m glad you like it.
@qw
Thanks for reporting that issue, qw! WebSMS is still in Beta so there might be one or two kinks left in the chain the we need to sort out.

Hey
Rebtel SMS is a great addition to Rebtel. I’ve been using it for international SMSs on my iPod Touch. The only concern I have is that my iPod reacts very slowly to typing the SMS. I believe the application that runs the RebtelSMS is quite data-heavy which causes this clogging. Making it lighter would be good.

Hey Russell
Happy to hear that you like it. We will definitely keep developing the WebSMS service. As you know, it’s still in Beta and will keep getting better. I think a iPod Touch/iPhone optimized Mobile Web version would be very useful and save people a lot of money.
Thanks!
