Rebtel Introduces Computer Calls
Today we’re proud to announce a new service currently in Beta called Computer Calls. With Computer Calls you’re able to call your Rebtel contacts from anywhere in the world using your regular Skype™ client.
Computer Calls are great if you want to make Rebtel calls from countries where you don’t have a SIM card or where the regular Rebtel service isn’t available. You initiate the call on the Rebtel website and use your Skype client to talk. As you’re calling directly over the Internet with Rebtel, you don’t have to pay a single cent for connection fees or high per-minute rates to Skype. Only the Rebtel rate.
To put the savings in perspective, the rate for calling a friend in India on their mobile using SkypeOut™ is 9.2¢ per minute. On top of that you also have to pay a connection fee of 7.9¢. Add it all together and you’ll get subtotal of 53.9¢ for a 5 minute call.
If you were to make that same call with our Computer Calls service using the very same client, you only pay the per-minute Rebtel rate to India, which is 1.8¢. There are no connection fees involved and your subtotal amounts to a mere 9¢.
Computer Calls also allow you to get a local number for your friends Skype Name and call them on it from your regular phone. In addition, you can also have all incoming Rebtel calls routed to your Skype client before having them go through to your preferred mobile or land line.
We’ve put together a brief guide to further explain the different features.
Using Computer Calls To Call Rebtel Friends
Go to your contact list on the Rebtel website, click on the local number of the friend you want to call and choose the new “Call from your computer” option.
Your Skype client is launched and you will be connected to your friend. You only pay the Rebtel rate.

Using Computer Calls To Receive Calls
With Computer Calls activated you can choose to receive incoming calls from Rebtel friends in your Skype client. In the settings menu, you can configure if you want Skype to ring for 10, 20 or 30 seconds before the call is automatically forwarded to your regular phone.
If you decide to answer the call on Skype, your friend calling only has to pay the cost for a local call. For you on the receiving end, the call is free.

Calling Friends On Their Skype Name
By adding Skype Names to your Rebtel contacts, you have the option of calling them directly on Skype. As usual, you’ll get a local Rebtel number back that you can save to your phonebook and call from your regular phone.
You only pay the cost for a local call to your carrier. The international part is free of cost.

Mind you, Computer Calls is a service currently in Beta. In other words, there are still a few kinks here and there that we need to iron out. Please bear with us and be sure to let us know on our Get Satisfaction page if you find any bugs that we should be aware of.

Hi, I am a great fan of Rebtel, which I use every single day without fail due to my family connections in Nigeria.
I am interested in the new computer calls concept but cant seem to get my head round how to use it if I were in Nigeria for instance.
Any guidance would be most appreciated. Do I buy a skype handset to get myself started or do I just use my mobile handset with the skype application downloaded to it?
I am due to go to Nigeria in 2 weeks time and any tips to save myself money on the phonecalls, as I do here in the UK would be most appreciated.
Many thanks and keep up the good work!!!

@shola If you’re in Nigeria and want to call a Rebtel contact, make sure your Skype client on your computer is running, go to to your Rebtel contact list, click the number you want to call and choose the “Call with my computer” option.
Computer Calls is great just because it allows for Rebtel users to make Rebtel calls regardless of where they are in the world. As long as you have your laptop with you and have access to an Internet connection you can enjoy calling for the usual Rebtel rates.
@Mirshamsuddin If you’re currently using SkypeOut to make calls but feel they rates are too expensive, Computer Calls lets you call for Rebtel rates instead.
Thanks guys!

@Muhammad @Chenthuran Thanks guys!
@Ali Ahmed You will still pay the regular Rebtel rate when using the Computer Calls service. The upside is that you are able to use it anywhere you like and you don’t have to pay the cost of a local call.

So what happens when I’m in Mongolia and want to call a UK number? Or when I’m there and want to call a skype number/name?

I live in Spain and my partner is in England. We both have skype on our computers but as I can only connect to the internet through a dongle (telefonica won’t put in telegraph poles!!) and can only get a GPRS signal I cannot get or make decent Skype calls. We therefore have a rather large Virgin landline bill in England. Is there anyway that you guys can help? Is a GPRS signal good enough for Computer Calls or is there anyway of helping via mobiles?
Any help at all would be fantastic.

I have finally settled for Rebtel after I have tried different voip service and calling cards including Pingo. Rebtel is the best of them, though not much savings when calling nonRebtel countries. And this Computer calls makes Rebtel better the only voip i know that works on Mac. Now the issue is I am visiting Nigeria in a couple month.
Please explain the call to Skype Names. Does it mean if I am in a nonRebtel country, for example, Nigeria and I call my Rebtel friends on their Skype Names from a regular phone I will be still local calls only by my carrier? Is the International call free?
Thank you

This is great. I’m always trying to figure out if I should use skype or rebtel depending on the expected lenght of my calls (shorts calls were sometimes better with skype) but this makes it a no brainer. Great job on finding ways to save even more.

This seems like great additions to an already great service. It took me a while to figure out the advantages of these features. I am sure there must be others with the same problem.. So here I am trying to explain the 3 features a little differently.. Hope this helps
Using Computer Calls To Call Rebtel Friends:
Essentailly a soft phone to call friends… Nothing to do with Skype account except that Skype is used to connect the call.
Advantages:
1. You can make calls if you have internet connection but no phone.
2. Making calls through Rebtel will save you a ton than using Skype or any other service.
Note: The advantage lies in that , you are calling your friends landline or cell phone at a great price. If he was also online you could talk for free using Skype or other services.
Using Computer Calls To Receive Calls:
This is for recieving phone calls from Rebtel friends on a soft phone. Again nothing do with your skype account. It is just that the calls are connected though it.
Advantages:
1. You can recieve calls if you have internet connection but no phone.
2. Your friend just pays for local call. (Correct me if I am wrong but wont his call be absolutely free if the friend is calling from a rebtel country to your rebtel number. This way he is still paying for a local call.)
Note: The advantage lies in that , your friend is calling from a landline or cell phone at a great price. If he was also online you could talk for free using Skype or other services.
Calling Friends On Their Skype Name:
This seems the most interesting to me… Using this you can call a Skype friend from a landline or cell phone. Your friend is either using a Skype phone or using a Soft client on the
computer. If he is online he can pick it up right away and talk. If not you leave him a VM that he can check later.
Advantage:
1. You dont have to be close to a computer to call a Skype friend.
2. This call is absolutely free (Yes you are paying your phone provider the local call rate but that you already do anytime you use your phone).
Note: There is not way to verify if your friend is online or not. Maybe a ping feature would be great.

@Rashida Happy to hear you enjoy the new service! Regardless of what country you might be in, you can simply log in to your Rebtel account, click on the phone number you wish to call and then choose “Call from your computer”. If you have previously added this person Skype name, you can choose to call them on their Skype by following the same steps. Thanks!

January 11th, 2010 at 10:12 am
@Ingrid Hi there! Actually, you pay no connection fees at all. We try to be the most transparent service we can be and the only cost you pay (the per minute rate) is disclosed on our website. Thanks!

I love it. I am so happy Rebtel now it is available from computer. I think you should work on having the “make and receive calls from Skype” working also with Skype on mobile, in that case you would definitely offer a great service. I haven’t tried. But am I correct in assuming that if a contact cal the rebtel number only my skype on computer will ring, and not the skype on mobile application?

Hey Stella,
Thanks for your nice words and feedback.
In theory there shouldn’t be any difference whether your logged in on your desktop client or mobile app. I gave it a try just now and called a friend on his Skype Name using a local Rebtel Number and it worked just fine.
Thanks!

Alexander, couldn’t find your email address so as requested I’ll type below:
I have used computer calls successfully a few times, but the link I click to start skype from my computer now seems to have disappeared from the list of options on the rebtel contacts page.
I spend a lot of time in a country not covered by rebtel directly so the skype link is a great feature.

Just to say thank you for your great service. I have been tired of the crappy calling cards. I signed up for jajah service sometime ago; it wasn’t good for me to use it to make call to Ehiopia. They charge you for the calls not connected. Also they have some hidden fees. Actually, they are okay to make calls in US and Euraope. But nothing comparable to Rebtel. Last night I called Ethiopia and talked to every member of my family for about an hour just for about $10 bucks. What a great service!!!
The only issue I had with it was that my caotact from Ethiopia is not able to make a COLLECT CALL. If Alexander could help me for that, it would be great.
By the way folks, don’t forget referring friends and get $10 dollar credit. I have not yet tried it because I didn’t want to refer someone without being happy for myself. This time I am happy with the service and ready to refer friends.
Wish you all best. Keep your best service, the next market will be yours.

Unfortunately, as Ethiopia is not yet a Rebtel Country, your family is unable to make Collect Calls to you in the US. However, we are constantly adding new countries and to make sure you’ll be the first to know when Ethopia is added, simply scroll to the bottom of this page http://www.rebtel.com/en/Rates/Rebtel-countries/ and enter your email address.
